Activities in Doonbeg Ireland

  • Farm visits
Sandhills House is located next door to a large dairy farm and guests, particularly children (accompanied by an adult) are welcome to visit the farm, to see daily farm work like milking the cows!
  • Birdwatching
West Clare offers varied and rich bird habitats - migratory shore birds, cliff colonies of Kittiwakes, Fulmars and Shags. There are also Choughs and Peregrine Falcons.
  • Dolphin watching
The Shannon Estuary is home to Ireland's only resident community of bottlenose dolphins. Over 100 dolphins have been identified at different times. The Shannon Dolphin and Wildlife Centre, located adjacent to Kilrush Creek Marina provides interesting information on the dolphins. Dolphin Watching trips leave from both Kilrush and Carrigaholt and dolphins are located on 98% of trips. Sailings operate from April to October, sailing times may vary and booking is advisable.
  • Horse riding
there is an equestrian centre within a 15 mins. drive
  • Angling
Sea Angling trips are available from Carrigaholt; beach angling at Doughmore as well as fishing in the inland waters are also very popular [more...]

Golfing Doonbeg

Golfing
Doonbeg Golf Course is a wonderful 18 hole links course just 5 minutes drive from Sandhills House. But there are many more golf courses in relatively short driving distance: Spanish Point is a 9 hole parkland course and the two magnificent 18 hole links courses in Lahinch Golf Course are all within 25 mins. to the north; Kilrush with its 18 hole parkland course and Kilkee with a beautifully located 18 hole course are less than 25 mins. to the South; Ennis has 2 courses - a 18 hole, par 70 parkland course and Woodstock Golf Club - both less than 45 mins. away. Ballybunnion and Killarney are just two of several top-class golf courses in County Kerry, which are within a hours drive from the Killimer-Tarbert Car Ferry. Green fees are welcome at all the above clubs but pre-booking is essential at Doonbeg, Lahinch and Ballybunion.

Sightseeing
The famous Cliffs of Moher are only 30 mins away; lesser known but equally impressing (without the crowds!) are the Cliffs of Kilkee and Loop Head Peninsula. 45 mins to the North is Doolin (where boats are leaving to the Aran Islands) and the unique limestone area of the Burren, a heaven for walkers, climbers and botanists. We also recommend strolling through the town of Ennis with its medieval atmosphere, while Bunratty and Knappogue Castles are only a little further apart. [more...]
