BEACHES

There are two sandy beaches within walking distance of Sandhills House and several more within a 16mile/26km radius.

Doughmore Beach, a five minute walk away, is a beautiful 2km long sandy beach. It is very popular for walking, surfing and fishing, but it is not recommended for swimming. There is a large expanse of rock at the northern end of the beach which has hundreds of rock pools that children love to explore. This area is also very popular with geologists who come here on a regular basis to study the rock formations.

Doughmore Beach was the site of the RAF Sunderland Plane Crash on 3rd December 1941 in which seven of the nine airmen on board the flying boat perished.

The Clogher beach, is a ten minute walk from Sandhills House and is popular for swimming, surfing, walking and fishing.

Across the bay from Doughmore, is The White Strand. This Blue Flag beach, located 2miles/3.5km from Doonbeg village is ideal for swimming and has a life guard on duty during the summer season. It is also popular for surfing and fishing.

Doughbeg beach is a sandy beach just outside Doonbeg village.

Kilkee beach (11miles/18km away) This crescent shaped beach of golden sand is very popular for swimming and watersports. Wonderful cliff walks surround the beach.

To the north is Seafield beach, a sandy beach 1.5miles/2.5km west of Quilty village.

Spanish Point, 7.5miles/12km away, is another Blue Flag beach and very popular for swimming, surfing and walking.
